Why Sports Cars Cost More To Insure

03.03.2011 (12:38 pm) – Filed under: Sports Car

Have you ever wondered why sports cars cost more to insure than other types of car even when the purchase price of the sports car is less expensive? If so, the following are the main reasons why this is the case.

Car Insurance Group Categories

While many of the factors that determine the make-up of car insurance quotes are not known, what is known is that insurance companies group certain types of cars into categories. For this purposes, insurance companies have groups ranging from 1 through to 20. Group 1 is the least expensive type of car to insure. Group 20 is the most expensive type of car to insure. So, if you buy a Fiat Panda, youll be classed a Group 1 car driver. Buy a sports car, any sports car, and you are looking at being classed a Group 15 and above driver. Buy a performance sports car, such as a Porsche 911, and youll definitely be Group 20 driver!

Theft

Over 2 million car crimes happen in the UK each and every year. Aside from popular model cars, such a Ford, the biggest car crime category is sports cars! Have a soft-top convertible sports car, and the chances of it being stolen are red hot! So, even if you live out in the countryside with no one else around for miles, you will still be seen as driving an extremely high risk car when it comes to car theft. With increased risk, comes an increased premium!

Accidents

Insurance companies are not charities theyre in the business to make money. As such, they keep vast amounts of data and part of that data tells them that if you drive a sports car there is an increased risk youll be in an accident and that the accident will be more serious (and costly) than if you were driving a regular car. As such, the premium charge is going to be higher.

Under 30?

Unless you have just won the Lottery, if you are under 30 there are no appealing factors when it comes to insuring a sports car. Not only do the insurance company see the car you drive as being a high risk car to insure, but you as the driver are far more risky to insure as well. Consequently, car insurance premiums for those 30 years of age or under, driving sports cars, is probably the highest of all types of car insurance available in the UK today.

Unforgettable Television Sports Cars From The 1970’s

24.02.2011 (12:38 pm) – Filed under: Sports Car

In the seventies it seems that most shows were to an extent, known for the cars that the stars drove in them as well as the stars themselves. Some of the shows you will find listed here, the cars in the shows were even known to receive their own fan mail. The weekly hero of the action packed T.V. show was almost assuredly driving a fast and expensive sports car. Most people tend to think they used the same car in every episode but usually there was a whole team of identical cars that followed the stars through the series.

See how many of the following cars you can remember from the seventies:

1. Gran Torino on Starsky and Hutch.

This was everyones favorite Muscle Car it seemed, at least the most recognizable.
The paint job (red with that big, white stripe) and the style prompted Ford to add it to their line. Gran Torino enthusiasts still get together to show off their rides to this day!

2. Do you remember Dan Tanna and his 1957 Thunderbird from Vegas?

In this program Robert Urich played a cop in Las Vegas named Dan Tanna who just loved cruising around the strip in his T-Bird. It was a bright and shiny red and was actually two identical cars used that they switched back and forth when taping the show. The character started out with a corvette but ended up with his signature T-Bird instead

3. Who can forget that bumbling detective Columbo and his beat up, old Peugeot? Well it can be categorized as a sports car technically, but it sure didnt look like one or act like one. But Columbo and his Peugeot was a match made in heaven with their unkempt appearance. Some folks in Ohio ended up with the car after the show was cancelled but they revived it for the Columbo movie in the 80s.

4. The golden Firebird Espirit of Detective Rockford is another classic. James Garner played Detective Rockford and always seemed to be having financial troubles but he could always afford to drive around in his signature Firebird.

5. 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado from Mannix. Another one of those great detective shows. Joe Mannix was played by actor Mike Connors and it was a very customized vehicle indeed and one that most people remember. Mannix had secret compartments all over the Toronado and it was a little more high tech then many cars of its era. In later episodes Mannix had an array of cars at his disposal but the 1966 Toronado seem to make the most impact.

Each one of these cars is memorialized by film. If you asked anyone about the 70s famous cars undoubtedly they would mention one or more of these cars. Of course there were a lot of others but these five seem to be the most likely to come up in a conversation about the era. After all they certainly did seem to steal the show right out from under the human stars.

Unforgettable Movie Sports Cars

17.02.2011 (12:38 pm) – Filed under: Sports Car

Actors get their names in movie credits, but very rarely do cars.Nevertheless, there are films that have featured a sports car that stole the scene and merited having its make and model mentioned in the credits. There are a number of cars that have been in great movies, but at least 5 really standout.

The Graduate: The Alfa Romeo

Dustin Hoffman was told that the future was in plastics, but he depended on the metal of his graduation gift, the cherry red Alfa Romeo, to get him to the church on time. The car was featured in numerous scenes and used in the some of the most critical moment of the movie.

Mad Max: XB Falcon

The post apocalyptic Australian desert was patrolled in style by Mel Gibson, who was Mad Max. He zipped across what was left of civilizationb in a 1974 XB Falcon V8 interceptor. Mad Max may have been a formable foe and beat up the villains, but although road weary, the XB Falcon cut a dramatic silhouette as it crossed the Australian wasteland.

Goldfinger and Thunderball: Astin Martin

If Americans were asked to name a British sports producer, they would probably name Astin Martin who is the maker of the Astin Martin DB5.The popularity of this sports car is directly attributable to James Bond, played by Sean Connery. Having James Bond behind the wheel would make any sports car look cool. But the Astin Martin would have looked cool anyway. The popularity of the Astin Martin was so high that the original sports car was stolen in 1979 from a Boca Raton, Florida airport.

Back to the Future: Delorean DMC-12

Even without its time travel abilities, the DMC-12 was very hard to forget. The DMC-12 did not sell as well as its creator, John Delorean, had hoped, but it became one of Americas icons after it appeared in Back to the Future films. The movie franchise and the stainless steel DMC-12 are inseparable in the minds of the public. One cant talk about the Back to Future movies without mentioning the car.

Bullitt: Mustang

Regarded by some as the king of cool, Steve McQueen, who acted in the movie Bullitt, will always be remembered for the chase scenes through the hilly roads of San Francisco. Steve McQueen took this famous ride in the 1968 Mustang GT390. Today this particular Mustang is still looked upon as being one of the best built in the franchises history. It is not unusual for movies to feature cars. The chase scene is an ever-present feature of modern films today. When cars have a key role in a movie, and the movie is a hit, the sports car can become unforgettable. Whether giving chase in some large city in the hills,or rescuing a woman, there are some sports cars with roles that are Oscar worthy*.*

Toyota Celicas – Are They Viable Sports Cars?

10.02.2011 (12:38 pm) – Filed under: Sports Car

Toyota Celicas have been around for quite some time now. Not quite as old as the Ford Pinto, but you know what I mean. Celicas have always been known for being the affordable sports car made by Toyota.

But, whats so special about this car? When in comparison to other similar priced cars, their quickness is no where near the performance that other cars can produce.

Not only that, Honda’s and Scion’s have much more aftermarket parts availiable for tricking out your ride. So, once in a while you’ll see a Black Toyota Celica in a street race, but if your a true racer, you’re not afraid of the Celica.

Modified Honda’s or Scion’s, even Chevy’s will blow away the Toyota. But that doesn’t stop Toyota lovers from their Celicas. Of course, they have their parts for modding, and they look pretty sweet, but when it comes down to racing, they just don’t cut it.

It’s not very common to see a Toyota Celica For Sale nowadays, it seems like they have all disappeared off the market. Unforunately for the United States, we get the shaft as the imported Celica’s can be quite beastly.

But, for Americans, it seems that all of the import cars get dumbed down when they come to America to comply with our sorry standards for safety, when in reality it is just stupid drivers that cause all the havoc.

Eighty-five year olds that can’t see 15 feet in front of them should not be driving anymore, and this society allows for practically every elder to own a license, and then there are those that are too stubborn to quit, even when they know they shouldn’t be driving.

The United States is full of ignorance, if you were to take that all away, along with a harsher drivers license requirements, all of the really cool import cars that can pick up speed like no other might actually be legal.

But, of course, it just doesn’t work that way. But, lets get back to Toyota Celicas. If your really interested in a Celica, it’s not like they are bad cars in anyways, but when compared to other sports and racing cars these days, they just can’t compete.

Toyota makes great cars, you can almost always rely on them that you are going to get a quality car that will last you a long time, and they’ve proven that over the years.

If you like the car, by all means go for it. You can find a Toyota Celica For Sale quite easy, although they don’t come in the numbers that say a Honda Civic might.

They have decent performance for the gas milage they get, and they have a unique style to them. You definitely won’t find any other car that looks like the Celica, they are quite easy to point out, even in the older years.

Although, there are way too many Red Celicas in the world right now, it would be a lot nicer if they were black, because if you’ve seen a nice black one, then you’ve seen a nice Celica. The red ones are too flashy for their own good, they are nice cars, but not that nice.

All in all, I think Toyota Celicas are quality cars, driveable, and reliable, but if you plan on racing one of these babies, you should prepare yourself to lose quite a bit, or be willing to put a lot of time and effort into modifications to compete with the big boys.

The Proper Care Of Sports Cards

20.01.2011 (12:38 pm) – Filed under: Sports Car

We have all heard with heavy hearts the stories about how our great grandfather carried around a Honus Wagner Card in his back pocket until the corners wore off and his mother threw it away when she did the laundry, or how our father put a Mickey Mantle in the spokes of his bicycle wheel, just to hear it click as he sped down the street. The fact that a Honus Wagner recently sold for 600,000 makes you cringe at Great Grandpas carelessness and wonder just what you would have done with all that money, but in reality it should make you think about what you are doing to protect the Mickey Mantle and Honus Wagner cards of this generation.

There are certain players in any sport that command the worlds attention even before their rookie season begins. When a player of this caliber is about to begin their career in professional sports, people snap up their cards and try to keep them pristine. While this is a smart move, all sports cards should be carefully stored, because you never know what the future holds for any player. Even notoriety outside the playing field can generate interest in a player and make the value of their cards go up. Wouldnt you hate to have your grandkids shaking their heads in disbelief because you let the Mickey Mantle of your day slip away?

Even if you dont put your favorite sports cards in between the spokes of your bike wheels, improper storage of your cards will cause them to deteriorate over time and when cards deteriorate they go down in value. In todays world, cards are much more than the prize you get with a stick of gum. Serious collectors consider sports cards to be an investment and it is important to protect your investment with proper storage.

Cards can be stored in one of two ways. They can be stored so that they are protected but still able to be viewed and enjoyed or they can be stored away archive style. Which way you choose to store your cards really depends on how often you are interested in looking at them and whether or not you want to take them out of their original packaging.

While the days of throwing your cards into a cardboard box are long gone, archive boxes are modeled after the shoeboxes of yesteryear. These special boxes are made to hold specific numbers of cards, ranging from 250 to 1000. Unlike traditional shoe boxes, these cases are sectioned off into compartments that are made to each hold a specific amount of cards or card packs. Whole unopened packs of cards can easily be stored in these boxes that keep dust and light away from your cards. These boxes are usually marked with the number of cards they can hold so that one glance at the box on the shelf should tell you how many cards a full box contains. If you dont have enough cards to fill the box, you need to pack the cards you do have tight, using the foam jam pads that wedge into the empty spaces.

Another popular way to store cards is in plastic coverings. You can buy plastic cases for each individual card or you can buy binders that hold plastic sleeves which display several cards to a page. The plastic on these specially designed holders never contains PVCs because as polyvinalchlorides break down they produce gases that can cause your cards to deteriorate. These plastic cases are also UV protected so that the sun cant do damage to your cards. The biggest thing that these covers protect your cards from is you. The acids on your fingers can do more damage to your cards than you realize.

It doesnt really matter which system you choose to protect your favorite sports cards, as long as you do something to protect them. Just make sure that as you make the effort to protect your cards, you take time to enjoy them as well. Great Grandpa may not have been the best keeper of his Honus Wagner, but you can be sure he enjoyed owning it.
